Clyde & Co's former senior partner and head of the Americas James Burns has left the firm.

Burns held the role of senior partner at the international firm from 2013 to 2016, when he stepped down to assume the role of head of the Americas.

He first joined Clyde & Co in 1989 and was elected to partner in 1998.

He took a prominent role in the implementation of the firm's entry and expansion in the U.S., Canada and Australia, as well as the firm's merger with Barlow Lyde & Gilbert in November 2011.

He retired from the firm in April, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

The firm has not replaced him in the role of head of the Americas, with that section of the business overseen by its eight-strong North America board, led by litigation partner Carolena Gordon.

A spokesperson for the firm said the U.S. is the firm's largest region outside the U.K., accounting for 23% of firmwide revenue. This year, the firm's global revenue topped £600 million.

The news of Burns' departure has emerged amid several exits from the firm in recent weeks.

Two groups have resigned this month, both to set up boutique offerings – an eight-partner team from Clyde & Co's San Francisco office, and a six-partner team from the firm's London base.

Earlier this year, the firm's senior partner Simon Konsta stepped down from his position two years early.

He has been replaced by arbitration group co-chair Peter Hirst, who will take over as senior partner on November 1.
