Private equity firm Warburg Pincus has hired former Latham & Watkins Beijing managing partner Du Yilong as a senior in-house lawyer.

Du has relocated to Hong Kong to be a managing director and co-general counsel for China and southeast Asia for Warburg. He shares the regional general counsel duties with Beijing-based Frank Marinaro, a former Loeb & Loeb partner in Beijing.

A U.S.-qualified corporate lawyer, Du advises on China-related capital markets and other corporate finance transactions. Earlier this year, he advised the underwriters on Chinese brokerage Shenwan Hongyuan Group Co. Ltd.'s $1.16 billion Hong Kong initial public offering.

Du joined Warburg in June from Latham's Beijing office, which he had led for most of the past four years. He first joined the U.S. firm from Goldman Sachs in 2015 as a Hong Kong-based partner, and soon transferred to head up the Beijing office, succeeding partner Allen Wang, who relocated to Boston. (Wang has since moved back to Hong Kong). In early 2018, Du briefly left the firm for a general counsel for international affairs role at Chinese ride-sharing app Didi Chuxing. He returned to Latham after only a few months.

Latham Hong Kong managing partner Josef Athanas has expanded his role and is now also managing partner for the Beijing office. Earlier this year, Latham promoted two capital markets lawyers in Hong Kong to partner – Zhang Daying and Dominik Sklenar. Zhang joined the firm in 2018 as counsel from Kirkland & Ellis.
