Arbitration boutique Three Crowns has opened a base in Bahrain, its first new office since it opened in 2014.

Partner duo Jan Paulsson and Scott Vesel will lead the new offering in the Middle East, relocating from Washington D.C. and London respectively.

Paulsson was one of the founding partners of Three Crowns, launching the boutique offering after leaving Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, where he was co-head of international arbitration.

He was part of a contingent of senior lawyers, including three partners from the Magic Circle firm, who founded the arbitration specialist in 2014.

In 2018, the firm hired longstanding Freshfields litigation partner, Reza Mohtashami QC, to its London office. Mohtashami had been at Freshfields for 19 years, including a six-year stint in Dubai for the firm.

In a statement, Paulsson said: "Given the rapid growth of the firm's practice in the Middle East, Three Crowns' decision to expand into the region was an obvious one.

"In choosing Bahrain for our new office, we will benefit from its status as a sophisticated financial centre, and its proximity to other key regional hubs."

According to the announcement by the firm, Three Crowns already has a number of large clients in the region, including the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Sultanate of Oman.

It has also advised clients including the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the State of Qatar, the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Islamic Republic of Iran, on disputes arising across multiple sectors.
