The Sydney office of global law firm K&L Gates has added Kane Barnett as a partner, after the recent government inquiry into the banking and investment sector increased demand for financial services lawyers.

Barnett joins the firm from Clifford Chance, where he led that firm's Australian funds practice.

Barnett has extensive experience acting for Australian and international clients on fund formation, investments in funds, and investments by and transactions involving funds, K&L Gates said in a statement. He advises across asset classes, including listed and unlisted real estate, infrastructure and private equity funds, and assists foreign investors with structuring their investments in Australian infrastructure and real estate assets.

Last year, Australia held an unprecedented year-long government inquiry into misconduct in the country's banking and financial services sector.

In the resulting report released in February, former High Court Justice Kenneth Hayne QC recommended 76 changes be made to the Australian financial industry – changes that would produce tougher regulations and improved governance in the troubled sector.

"Our firm's investment management practice in Australia has been exceptionally busy and we expect this trend to continue in the wake of the Hayne Royal Commission," said Nick Nichola, K&L Gates' managing partner in Australia.

"Kane's experience and knowledge of a diverse range of funds will be a great complement and bolster to the existing team, including Melbourne-based partners Jim Bulling and Daniel Knight," Nichola continued. "With a strong track record acting for high-profile clients based both domestically and internationally, Kane will be a real asset for our clients to draw upon. It is a pleasure to welcome him to the firm."

Barnett said the firm has "excellent strength and depth of experience" in investment management and funds work across its global platform.

"I am excited about the opportunity to continue doing great cross-border work as part of such a strong team," he said.

Clifford Chance said in a statement: "We thank Kane for his efforts in his time with us and wish him all the very best for the future."
