Global law firm Clyde & Co has hired maritime, commodities and transport lawyer – and qualified master mariner – Ernie van Buuren to join its partnership in Australia.

Van Buuren has advised on high-profile shipping, maritime and aviation matters in the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia, Fiji, New Caledonia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, and will join the firm in December from Norton Rose Fulbright, where he has been a partner since 2011.

"Ernie has extensive experience in providing advice on shipping, maritime, offshore and aviation matters in the Asia-Pacific region. His deep client relationships and technical expertise are a welcome addition to the firm," said Maurice Thompson, national group head for maritime and commodities at Clyde & Co.

"We're pleased to have Ernie joining the global partnership. His experience and qualifications are enviable in terms of client offerings in the transport, offshore and marine sectors, both in Australia and in the greater Asia-Pacific region."

Australia managing partner Michael Tooma said van Buuren's hire is part of the firm's strategic objective to capitalise on the growth potential of the transport sector in the Australian market and across the region.

"Our strategy has been to lead in target sectors, and the addition of Ernie certainly underscores that approach," he said.

In a statement, a Norton Rose Fullbright spokesman said: "Ernie van Buuren has retired as a partner and will be leaving later this year. We wish him all the best."
