The former general counsel of TransferWise has been appointed by a tech network to help it support digital transformation in the U.K. legal sector, following a major mandate from the Ministry of Justice.

The government has announced public body Tech Nation will now help to deliver on the objectives of the former's Lawtech Delivery Panel, which was unveiled in October last year and has been allocated £2 million of funding.

To work on the project, Tech Nation, a U.K. tech support network, has appointed former TransferWise general counsel, Jenifer Swallow, to lead on delivery. Her remit will also include engagement with the legaltech and law industries.

Swallow resigned from TransferWise in June this year, having served as GC since September 2015.

In a statement, she said: "The transformational potential of tech is huge. Considering the foundational nature of law and legal services for our businesses and wider society, I am delighted to have the opportunity as director of the lawtech delivery function to help accelerate the evolution of the sector through tech."

The Lawtech Delivery Panel aims to reduce regulatory barriers for new market entrants as well as ensuring that the right regulatory regime is in place to support innovation and encourage investment. It is comprised of eight industry professionals, including Vodafone and Bank of England general counsel.

The full panel comprises:

  • Christina Blacklaws, consultant and chair of the Lawtech Delivery Panel
  • Rt Hon Lord Keen of Elie QC, justice minister
  • Rt Hon Sir Geoffrey Vos, chancellor of the High Court
  • Professor Richard Susskind, author and independent adviser, including technology adviser to the Lord Chief Justice
  • Dr Anna Donovan, University College London
  • Rosemary Martin, general counsel, Vodafone
  • Gary Campkin, managing director, TheCityUK
