Leading Chinese firm Fangda Partners has brought aboard mergers and acquisitions partner Mark Lehmkuhler in Hong Kong from Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe, as part of a string of Fangda partner hires in the city.
Lehmkuhler focuses on M&A transactions, including private equity portfolio investments, leveraged buyouts, tender offers and cross-border joint ventures and strategic alliances in China and Hong Kong, in the technology, infrastructure, energy and finance sectors. Last year, Lehmkuhler, together with partner Jeffrey Sun in Shanghai, advised Chinese e-commerce company JD.com Inc. on a $115 million investment in China Logistics Property Holdings Co. Ltd.
He leaves Orrick after two and a half years with the firm. Previously, Lehmkuhler practised at Davis Polk for 14 years in Hong Kong, Tokyo and New York until 2015. He first joined the Wall Street firm in 1995 as an associate and left in 2000 for The iReality Group, a boutique investment bank focused on technology in Asia, as an executive director, where he advised on M&A in the region. Lehmkuhler rejoined Davis Polk a year later and made partner in Hong Kong in 2008.
Lehmkuhler is the latest in a string of partner hires in Hong Kong from international firms by Fangda. Since last year, the Chinese firm recruited investment funds partner Yue Zhang from Kirkland & Ellis, a seven-lawyer Hong Kong capital markets team, led by partners Colin Law and Peter Chen, from Shearman & Sterling and former CMS international arbitration counsel Olga Boltenko as a partner.
Meanwhile, Lehmkuhler is the latest departure from Orrick's Hong Kong office. In May, former partner and Hong Kong commercial litigation and international arbitration head Charles Allen left the firm and joined Reynolds Porter Chamberlain. And in 2017, a seven-partner team, as well as two partners in China, left to join Morgan, Lewis & Bockius. In addition, four of counsels also left Orrick to join Morgan Lewis as Hong Kong partners.
Orrick's Hong Kong office is left with five partners: M&A and private equity specialists David Halperin, Sook Young Yeu, Mark Weeks and Scott Peterman; as well as disputes lawyer Erica Chong, who made partner this year. Sook serves as administrative partner in charge of Orrick's Hong Kong office.
