Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan and Herbert Smith Freehills both scooped two awards each at Legal Week's inaugural Commercial Litigation & Arbitration Awards last night (November 5).
In a ceremony at the Waldorf Hilton, Quinn Emanuel picked up accolades for Competition Litigation Team of the Year and International Arbitration Team of the Year.
Heading off competition from Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, HSF and Kirkland & Ellis in the international arbitration category, Quinn Emanuel bagged top honours for its work advising JSC Oschadbank in its $1.3 billion Crimean investments claim, which judges described as a "significant win on all fronts".
Meanwhile, HSF walked away with the awards for IP Litigation Team of the Year – following its High Court Victory acting for Roche in a case that centred on the ever-evolving law of 'arrow declarations' – and Insurance and Reinsurance Litigation Team of the Year.
There were 16 categories in this year's awards, with prizes for sector-specific litigation including in banking, competition, real estate and white-collar crime.
Underpinned by its work in a precedent-setting victory at the Privy Council, Stephenson Harwood fended off competition from the likes of Baker McKenzie and A&L Goodbody to take home the Trusts and Estates Litigation Team of the Year award.
Ned Beale at Trowers & Hamlins was honoured with the Litigator of the Year in Private Practice award, having demonstrated "innovation and creativity" in an unprecedented intervention of MPs in the Supreme Court during one of the most important company law cases of 2019.
The Lifetime Achievement Award meanwhile went to Sir William Blair. Judges said there is "no other individual who could've done more, so selflessly and with such personal modesty, for the rule of law and for commercial dispute resolution".
Other winners include Travers Smith and Simmons & Simmons, which took home Banking Litigation Team of the Year; DLA Piper, which picked up Regulatory and Investigations Litigation Team of the Year; and Watson Farley & Williams, which was awarded Construction and Engineering Litigation Team of the Year.
