Yan Xuan, who joined Squire Patton Boggs in July 2018 as a Shanghai partner to launch an international public policy practice in China, has left after less than a year with the firm.

Xuan left Squire in April to join U.S. software giant Microsoft Corp. as global vice-president based in Beijing. Before his brief stint at Squire, he spent most of his career working as a business executive at multinational companies, including Nielsen Co., Oracle Corp., Microsoft Corp. and AT&T Inc. Between 2010 and 2011, he held a senior in-house legal role at Qualcomm Inc.

Squire recruited Xuan at the beginning of the U.S.-China trade war to advise Chinese companies entering global markets and help the firm's international clients operate and invest in China. Washington, D.C., partner Robert Kapla, who leads Squire's global public policy practice, said in a statement at the time that "political and economic volatility is driving client demand for public policy advice", including in China.

Xuan's departure leaves Squire with two partners in Shanghai – Daniel Roules and Lindsay Zhu, who both specialise in cross-border transactions. In addition, Los Angeles-based corporate partner James Hsu also spends time in Shanghai as well as Beijing.
