Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has hired Linklaters' global head of alternative legal services, Mark Higgs, whose unexpected departure came just weeks after he was appointed to the position.

Higgs will join Freshfields as its new chief operating officer in December.

"We're delighted to have Mark onboard at what is an incredibly exciting time for the London office, as we prepare for our move to 100 Bishopsgate," Freshfields London managing partner Claire Wills said in a statement. "His experience will be invaluable in helping us drive forward our business and operations strategy."

The move comes just days after Law.com's Legal Week first reported that Freshfields had parted ways with its chief information officer, Jon Grainger.

He spent less than a year at the firm as chief operating officer of its flexi-lawyering platform, Re:Link, and had just been appointed to the new position of global head in October.

In that role, he was to lead the firm's Re:link, legal project management, and alternative resourcing and legaltech teams, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Before that, he helped lead on the launch and growth of Re:Link itself, which went live in April this year.

The firm is not replacing Higgs, according to a person with knowledge of the departure.

Linklaters said that its director of legal operations, Stewart Chippindale, will continue to provide senior leadership and strategic direction for Re:Link.

Higgs joined the firm from Ashurst, where he was director of the firm's own alternative legal service, Ashurst Advance, and prior to that had led Ashurst's strategic projects team.

In January, Allen & Overy's own flexible legal services head, Richard Punt, left the Magic Circle firm, having led its Peerpoint division. He is now chief strategy officer at Thomson Reuters.
