Shearman & Sterling has promoted Roberta Berliner Cherman, a member of the capital markets practice, to resident partner in the firm's São Paulo office.

Berliner Cherman focuses on advising Brazilian and international corporate issuers and financial institutions in equity and debt securities transactions, including SEC-registered, institutional and private placement transactions. In addition, she works on a wide range of corporate governance, finance, regulatory and other matters.

"Roberta has deep relationships with leading corporates and financial institutions in Brazil and a proven ability to offer clients innovative solutions to complex cross-border matters," said Antonia Stolper, head of the firm's Latin America group. "Her appointment reflects our continued investment in the region."

In the last three months, Berliner Cherman has advised on a number of transactions, including Banco do Brasil's $1.4 billion equity offering, oil firm Petrobras's $20 billion exchange offer, and debt and equity offerings for financial groups Banco Votorantim and Itaú Unibanco and for real estate developers Trisul and Helbor.

For almost a decade after that, she held senior positions in Europe and Brazil at Itaú Unibanco, the largest private financial institution in Latin America, and then rejoined Shearman in 2017.

She is one of eight newly elected partners at the firm, including tax attorney Ryan Bray in Houston, James Clayton-Payne with the mergers and acquisitions group in Singapore, litigator Michael Mitchell in Washington, D.C., Jennifer Morton with the financial institutions advisory and financial regulatory practice in New York, Lachlan Poustie in project development and finance in Paris, Benjamin Siino of the international arbitration and public international law group in Paris and Nick Withers in the London mergers and acquisitions group.
