U.S. firms Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft and O'Melveny & Myers have made up five partners each as part of their global promotion rounds. Three London-based lawyers across the firms were promoted.
Cadwalader's London promotions include corporate partner Joanna Valentine and finance partner Nathan Parker. O'Melveny promoted a single London M&A partner, Sevda Staykova.
The London promotions for both firms were the only ones outside of the United States. O'Melveny promoted a further four partners across three offices: New York, Century City and Washington, D.C.
According to the firm, four of the five incoming partners are women, people of colour, or LGBT. It also stated that this is the sixth year in which women make up more than 40% of the firm's new partnership class.
Cadwalader also promoted three partners across two of its offices – Charlotte in North Carolina, and New York.
Earlier this year, O'Melveny lost a number of prominent partners from its London base, including Daniel Quinn and Aleksander Bakic to Akin Gump in late March, and Eve Ellis to Ropes & Gray in April. The exits came amid merger discussions with Allen & Overy, which ended in September.
However, according to its LLP accounts, the firm boosted operating profits at its London arm to almost £5 million last year – a staggering rise of more than 400% compared with the previous year.
The two firms are the latest U.S. players to make promotions in London. Both Weil Gotshal & Manges and Sidley Austin saw increases in their London uptake, however other firms such as Latham & Watkins, White & Case and Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton all decreased London promotions, with the latter not making up any London lawyers this year.
