Eversheds Harry Elias has hired an investigations partner in Singapore.
Weiyi Tan was, until 2018, a partner with Baker McKenzie in the city-state. She specialises in internal and regulatory investigations, having advised financial institution clients on cross-border investigations of white-collar charges such as money laundering and insider trading.
Tan practiced with Baker McKenzie for 11 years and made partner in 2016. She left the firm in 2018 to pursue an LL.M. at Georgetown University Law Center. Last year, she worked as an extern with the International Monetary Fund in Washington, D.C., on anti-money laundering and anti-terrorist financing guidelines. She is in the process of qualifying to practice in New York.
Tan said she will work closely with the Eversheds Sutherland investigation teams, particularly in the major financial centers of London, New York and Hong Kong. "Regulators are more active and clients expect 'follow the sun' support, particularly on complex, cross-border investigations," she said.
"The timing of Weiyi's appointment is significant. Singapore has a reputation as one of the least corrupt jurisdictions in Asia," said Philip Fong, Eversheds Harry Elias' Singapore managing partner. "That said, the scope of internal and regulatory investigations is increasingly cross-border and multijurisdictional. As the regional hub in Southeast Asia, it is important that Singapore has experienced partners and teams to work with our global investigations team."
Eversheds Sutherland merged with Singaporean firm Harry Elias Partnership in 2017 and became one of the few international firms to practice a full range of Singaporean law. In June 2019, the combined firm hired its first lateral partner—banking and financial services lawyer Gerard Ng.
Tan's addition is also part of Eversheds' efforts to bolster its Asia disputes practice. Last week, litigation partner Mark Hughes and international arbitration partner Wesley Pang both joined the firm in Hong Kong.
