BT is currently reviewing its U.K. legal panel and aims to "significantly reduce" the number of law firms it uses, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

The telecoms giant is expected to announce its new reduced panel towards the end of March.

There are currently 37 law firms on its formal roster for U.K. and international matters originating from its head office, including Magic Circle quartet Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Allen & Overy, Clifford Chance and Linklaters.

Other firms currently on the line up include Addleshaw Goddard, Eversheds Sutherland, Baker McKenzie, Bond Dickinson, Burges Salmon, DAC Beachcroft, DWF, Fieldfisher, Osborne Clarke, Simmons & Simmons and TLT.

The panel was last reviewed in April 2017, when the company added a significant number of firms to its previous 19-strong roster.

A spokesperson for BT confirmed the plans in a statement: "We are mid-way through re-tendering our legal panel at the moment, looking to consolidate the number of firms that we work with to enable us to have fewer, deeper relationships with our panel firms."

The move follows a range of organisations aiming to slim down their legal panels, including National Grid and Kraft Heinz.
