Dentons has poached two longtime CMS Cameron McKenna partners, along with five other lawyers, to strengthen its banking and finance practice in Bucharest and across Eastern Europe.
Simon Dayes and Simona Marin were with CMS for 15 years.
Dayes focuses on project finance, structured trade finance and restructuring, as well as corporate and real estate finance. Marin specializes in real estate.
"The appointment of two of the most experienced banking and finance partners in the region marks a new era for us and is a crucial building block of what we call 'Dentons Romania 2.0': our strategy to attract market-leading talent in strategic practice areas to meet growing client demand," Perry Zizzi, managing partner of Dentons Romania, said in a statement. "By the end of 2020, we fully expect to stand at 60 lawyers and be one of the largest international law firms in Romania, advising clients locally, in Central and Eastern Europe and beyond," he added.
Dentons currently has 16 lawyers in Romania, including three partners and two counsel.
The moves come nearly two years after CMS poached nine Dentons banking and finance lawyers in Warsaw, Poland.
Mateusz Toczyski, Dentons' Europe head of banking and finance, said the firm has further plans to expand in the coming year.
Dayes said Dentons' commitment to investing and expanding in Bucharest and globally attracted the team to the firm. Marin said interest from overseas investors is increasing.
Dentons has been expanding across Europe in recent months. In October, it hired Allen & Overy lawyer Loredana Chitu in Bucharest. And in September, it brought on Allen & Overy attorney Juraj Gyarfáš as a partner in Bratislava, Slovakia.
Dentons has also been expanding elsewhere in Europe. It recently added lawyers to its Amsterdam office and has also increased head count in Düsseldorf, Germany, Rome, and Milan.
