Ropes & Gray's London co-head Mike Goetz has retired from the firm after 10 years in the role.

Goetz, who launched Ropes' London outpost in 2010 alongside former co-head Maurice Allen, left the firm at the end of 2019, according to a spokesperson for the firm.

The London office will now be led solely by the firm's other managing partner Will Rosen, who was appointed to co-lead the London office alongside Goetz in 2018.

Goetz and Allen joined Ropes after an 18-month stint at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer that ended in October 2009. Prior to that, they had been at White & Case for seven years.

Allen retired from the firm at the end of 2016 and joined DLA Piper as a consultant the following year.

Goetz was a finance lawyer by background, and his list of clients has included the likes of CVC Capital Partners, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, and Bain Capital.

Rosen said in a statement: "I'd like to thank Mike for the contribution he has made to the firm and the London office in particular. I — and the rest of the team in London — look forward to building on what he has helped create."

Goetz added: "I'm incredibly proud of what we have achieved. We have established an enviable reputation as the go-to firm for our industry-leading client base and have advised on many of the standout and most innovative deals in the market."

"I would like to commend Mike for his role in the success of the firm in London," said David Djaha, managing partner of Ropes & Gray, in a statement. "His vision and drive were critical factors in the growth we are delivering in London."

Ropes has made several hires in London in recent years, including O'Melveny & Myers funds partner Eve Ellis and Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld financial services contentious regulatory partner Rosemarie Paul last year, and Clifford Chance white-collar partner Judith Seddon in 2018. The firm has also seen a series of exits from its London office, including its global co-head of private investment funds Matthew Judd, who left the firm last year.

Ropes' London office now has 125 lawyers in London, including 24 partners.
