Australian business law firm Hall & Wilcox has expanded its technology and digital economy practice with the hire of partner John Gray to lead the information technology and intellectual property practice in Sydney.

Gray joins the firm from HWL Ebsworth Lawyers, which bills itself as the largest law firm in Australia by partner number.

He brings extensive experience advising clients on commercial transactions and legal disputes in the fields of technology, telecommunications and media, Hall & Wilcox said. His experience encompasses the legal issues associated with the use of technology in business and government, including licensing, privacy and data protection, copyright, branding and e-payments.

"We are excited to welcome John to Hall & Wilcox. His appointment will provide further depth to the firm's digital economy and innovation industry expertise," managing partner Tony Macvean said in a statement.

Gray said he is honored to be joining Hall & Wilcox. "It's a refreshingly authentic firm that puts its people first and pursues genuine innovation in law," he said.

A spokesperson for HWL Ebsworth declined to comment.
