Ashurst has opened an office in Los Angeles, its second base in the U.S. and its first on the West Coast.

The new offering in Santa Monica is being led by partner Anna Hermelin, who previously worked in the firm's Tokyo office, Ashurst managing partner Paul Jenkins told Law.com International.

The new base will focus predominately on projects and project finance work in the transport and social infrastructure sectors, according to the firm.

Hermelin will be supported by three other California-licensed lawyers and one member of support staff initially, with the expectation that headcount will increase to between seven and 10 in the office's first year.

Partner Anna Hermelin leads the new base.

The base, Ashurst's 28th globally, sits alongside Ashurst's existing office in New York.

It follows a concerted push by Ashurst into the region, after it re-organised its U.S. focus in 2017.

The firm has bolstered its project finance and infrastructure groups with several hires to its New York base since then, including appointing senior counsel Betty Cerini from U.S. outfit Hunton Andrews Kurth as a partner and co-chair of infrastructure in the Americas last year.

Jenkins told Law.com International the firm has been working on several mandates for the Los Angeles Metro and Civic Centre in recent months.

Los Angeles is the third biggest U.S. city for legal services, according to 2018 research seen by Law.com. That year, the LA legal market was worth $18.4 billion dollars. New York, the largest legal services market was worth $33.4 billion, which is not far behind the whole of the U.K. market at $48.5 billion.

Jenkins added in a statement: "We are very serious about our goal to become one of the world's leading projects, project finance and infrastructure firms. Our U.S. offering continues to perform exceptionally well and opening our office in LA is another step towards achieving those ambitions."

The office is the second new international base for the firm in recent years. It opened in Luxembourg in 2018.
