The environmental protest group Extinction Rebellion will protest outside Slaughter and May's London office on Friday, due to the firm's major clients in the oil and gas sector.

Extinction Rebellion said in a statement it aims to "expose the role" of U.K. law firms which support the fossil fuel industry.

In a statement, the environmental movement group has said it is targeting Slaughters because it acts for major clients in the oil and gas sector, including Shell, Maersk Oil, INEOS and Premier Oil.

In 2015, the firm advised Shell on its £47 billion acquisition of BG Group, as well as advising Maersk Oil who were acquired by Total for $7.45 billion in 2017.

Last year, it also took a lead role on the £250 million sale of energy provider Wood Group's nuclear business operations in the U.K.

Friday's protest will include staging a crime scene and engagement with the firm's staff, Extinction Rebellion added.

The statement continued: "The legal community has an ethical obligation to take all possible steps to reduce carbon omissions and it is incumbent on the biggest players to take up the biggest challenges."

Slaughters lawyers are among a number of firms and companies to work on the creation of new model contracts and laws aiming to help lawyers and businesses fight climate change earlier this week.

Slaughter and May declined to comment.
