Longtime Herbert Smith Freehills partner Peter Smith has left to join local firm Johnson Winter & Slattery as a partner in its restructuring and insolvency practice.

Smith, formerly head of Herbert Smith Freehills' Australian restructuring, turnaround and insolvency practice, had been at HSF for two decades, since January 2000.

Based in Brisbane, he is one of Australia's top restructuring, turnaround and insolvency lawyers and one of Queensland's leading corporate litigators, Johnson Winter said in a statement.

"We have one of Australia's strongest R&I practices. Our expertise is increasingly sought after to advise on many of Australia's most complex and high-profile liquidations and restructures. Peter will further strengthen our capabilities and give our clients a platform in QLD to support their requirements in this area," Johnson Winter partner Joseph Scarcella said in a statement.

A spokesperson for HSF said Smith left with the firm's best wishes.

Johnson Winter is an independent national Australian law firm with over 60 partners and offices across Australia.

In August of last year, Johnson Winter hired Simon Haddy, who also was a long-time corporate partner at HSF.
