Greenberg Traurig has hired Baker Mckenzie's former global insolvency and restructuring co-head, in another partner addition to its London office.

London-based partner Ian Jack joins Greenberg after 24 years at Baker McKenzie, where he was a partner in the firm's banking and finance practice and formerly the co-head of its global insolvency and restructuring practice.

As the coronavirus puts a strain on businesses, lawyers expect the demand for insolvency and restructuring lawyers to increase. Greenberg chairman Richard Rosenbaum emphasized that the hire of Jack would bolster the firm's practice at a time when it is needed.

"I have been around a long time, but all countries, businesses and law firms are no doubt facing an unprecedented period of disruption, change and challenges," he said.

Jack previously led a team advising airline Lufthansa on the sale of British Midland International to British Airways' owner International Consolidated Airlines Group. He also led a team advising on the sale of one of London's landmark skyscrapers, the Gherkin, in 2014.

"Greenberg Traurig's collaborative approach to answering clients' needs and challenges in the most efficient manner possible is important to me and my practice," he said in a statement. "I am very familiar with the team in London and look forward to working with them and firm members across the globe."

Greenberg has been making a push at hiring in the U.K. and across Europe recently. Last month, the firm hired a litigation duo from Mishcon de Reya in London.

Meanwhile in Europe, the firm expanded its Amsterdam office, and established itself in Milan through a merger with Santa Maria Studio Legale, with which the firm had a strategic alliance since 2005.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Baker McKenzie said of Jack's departure that the firm "wishes him the best for the future."
