Two firms are set to make swathes of support staff redundancies in the U.K.

Knights Group's latest acquisition, Leeds-headquartered law firm Shulmans, is set to make mass redundancies following the takeover, while transatlantic firm Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner is cutting its London-based document production team.

A person with knowledge of the situation said that 56 of Shulmans' support staff positions are at risk. The move comes after Knights announced it was acquiring Shulmans for up to £20.1m earlier in March.

Knights said in a statement at the time that the acquisition "significantly increases Knights' footprint by providing entry into Leeds, in line with the group's strategy to accelerate its organic growth through carefully targeted acquisitions which are a strong cultural fit and strengthen existing offices, add new geographies or bring complementary business services."

RollOnFriday wrote earlier in March that 100 roles at Shulmans had been put at risk following Knights' acquisition of the firm.

A spokesperson for Knights said in a statement: "As with any acquisition, there are synergies in integrating Shulmans into Knights, especially in light of the investments we made in our operational backbone in 2019, including support staff, as we prepared to scale."

Shulmans did not respond to requests for comment.

BCLP meanwhile is also set to slim its London-based document production team following a review of whether the services could be outsourced to an external provider in the U.S.

A spokesperson for the firm said in a statement: "BCLP has, for a number of months, been in discussions with one of its existing service providers to ascertain whether operational efficiencies could be achieved by outsourcing those aspects of the document production service that are currently carried out from London. This provider already carries out the same services for us in the U.S."

The person further added that the firm is "in the course of exploring what we can do to avoid or mitigate the effects of the potential redundancies" by offering redundancy packages or transitional roles.
