Covington & Burling has added a competition partner from Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner (BCLP) in London, the firm announced in a statement on Monday.

James Marshall joins Covington after over a decade at the firm, having originally joined legacy Berwin Leighton Paisner in 2011.

Marshall said in a statement: "I believe we have a unique opportunity to build on the firm's achievements to date, at a crucial time when the U.K. competition agencies are introducing urgent measures to address the COVID-19 health crisis while also leaving the European Union, and I look forward to joining the team."

Earlier in his career, Marshall spent close to five years at Slaughter and May and close to three years at King & Wood Mallesons, according to his LinkedIn profile.

He also spent time as a policy advisor at the Competition and Markets Authority.

A spokesperson for BCLP said in a statement: "We will miss having James as a colleague in our litigation and corporate risk department and all of us wish him every success for the future."

Marshal"s hire marks the first lateral partner hire for Covington's London office this year. Last year, the firm had focused on expanding its Middle East capabilities, especially in Dubai where the firm most recently hired former Clifford Chance corporate partner Rupert Harper.
