The U.K.'s Ministry of Defence often calls on external law firms.

U.K. top 50 law firm Burges Salmon has won a lucrative mandate from the Ministry of Defence (MOD) to provide external legal advice. 

The contract, signed at the end of January this year, will run until January 2023 and is worth £3.1 million in total.

According to contracts published on the U.K. government website, Burges Salmon will provide legal advice relating to drafting and negotiating defence contracts for the department from its Bristol office at Glass Wharf.

Burges Salmon has a longstanding relationship with the MOD. It 2017, it advised the department on a £1.4 billion contract with BAE Systems to deliver the Astute class submarine to the Royal Navy, according to the firm's website.

The MOD itself has intitiated a number of contracts with external legal firms in the past year. In May 2019, it appointed Gowling WLG to advise on matters including how to use legal input to minimise costs and maximise efficiency as part of a four-year contract worth up to £2.9 million.

In June, the MOD awarded insurance specialists Keoghs and BLM contracts worth a combined total of £10 million for litigation services on a wide range of compensation claims put forward by MoD personnel and civilians.
