When he started out as a trainee, success for TLT corporate partner Patrick Somers was all about making partner as soon as possible. "Nothing else mattered and sacrificing family life or letting down your friends because you were stuck at work, were almost seen as badges of honour," he says.

"That no longer holds true and more importantly, shouldn't be considered as acceptable," he adds. "We have all seen the negative effects of this model."

So what is the right balance between family and hobbies and career progression? Should it viewed as a success if someone makes partner but their private life falls apart?
