Slaughter and May and Allen & Overy are among the latest firms to move their summer vacation schemes online.

The two firms join a swathe of others including Linklaters, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Pinsent Masons that have set out plans for virtual U.K. schemes in the coming months as they deal with the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Travers Smith, Baker McKenzie and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom have also made similar changes.

Slaughters is set to transfer its three summer vacation schemes onto a virtual platform, according to one person with knowledge of the situation, with each scheme reduced from three weeks to one week.

People who had accepted offers on the firm's cancelled spring vacation scheme have also been offered places on the virtual summer course, the person added.

A&O has also gone virtual, the firm confirmed, with the summer scheme set to take place over a one-week period at the end of June.

An A&O spokesperson added that the itinerary for the programme "aims to replicate as much of our usual course as possible."

"Students will have the opportunity to gain first hand exposure of a number of core areas of A&O, be able to engage with our diversity networks as well as gain insight into the world of legal tech."

Vacation schemes are work experience programmes run by top law firms during student holiday periods and typically used as a means for scouting talent for future training contracts.

A spokesperson for Travers said that the firm will be doing a one-week virtual scheme instead of its usual two-week programme, but that attendees will be paid the previously-agreed sum for both weeks. The firm will be using a platform designed by digital education provider, Inside Sherpa.

Baker McKenzie will hold two virtual schemes starting in June and July, both of which have been shorterned from the usual three weeks to a fortnight. The firm added that participants will be given the opportunity to participate in group tasks, including a mock client pitch, practice and industry group meetings, as well as virtual socials and wellbeing sessions.

Skadden also confirmed that its London office summer vacation schemes will proceed this year on schedule, remotely. The firm is set to host four virtual vacation schemes, each lasting for one week.

Finally, Covington & Burling have also unveiled plans for a week-long vacation scheme in June which will take place remotely.
