Ropes & Gray has hired London-based Linklaters asset management partner Tom Alabaster to be its new head of Europe, Middle East and Africa funds.

Alabaster is set to join the U.S. firm's London office in the new role, after three years as a partner at Linklaters.

Prior to joining Linklaters, he spent three years as a partner at Latham & Watkins in London, where he was co-head of investment funds at the firm. Prior to that he was an in-house counsel at The Carlyle Group.

In a statement, Bryan Chegwidden, leader of Ropes asset management practice, commented: "Tom is a sophisticated counselor and adviser. He draws on years of experience in the U.S. and U.K. steering asset managers on a full spectrum of complex issues.

"He sees the big picture, and understands the most technical issues so as to make decisions with a client's business interests front and centre."

In October last year, Linklaters also lost M&A heavyweight David Avery-Gee to U.S. firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges' base in London.

Ropes has made several hires in London in recent years, including O'Melveny & Myers funds partner Eve Ellis and Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld financial services contentious regulatory partner Rosemarie Paul last year, and Clifford Chance white-collar partner Judith Seddon in 2018.
