Three partners have exited CMS's Madrid office, the firm has confirmed.
Corporate partners Javier Leyva Olarte and Rafael Sánchez, and public law partner Juan José Zabala have all left the firm's Spanish practice, CMS Albiñana & Suárez de Lezo.
In addition, the practice's co-head of banking, Abraham Nájera, is set to leave the partnership in August, but will remain with the firm in another capacity.
According to a statement by CMS, the departures were by mutual agreement and are part of a strategic three-year plan initiated at the end of 2019.
The firm said it was seeking to 'adjust' certain practice areas in the region, which consequently meant making changes to the partnership itself. It added that the changes were not as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
A spokesperson for CMS commented: "The departure of these partners is the result of a mutual agreement between the firm and the outgoing partners, whom we thank sincerely for their dedication to the firm in the past few years and wish them all the best in their next profesional endeavours.
"Abraham Nájera, partner in the banking group, has asked to leave the partnership for personal reasons but will continue working with the firm in another capacity, still to be defined."
In April, CMS confirmed that it had axed 11 staff from the Madrid practice as a result of the coronavirus. Those affected included six associates and two secretaries who were made redundant, and three interns who the firm said it would rehire in October.
