World Athletics has appointed U.K. firm Pinsent Masons as its first official supplier of legal services, as part of a four-year mandate.

Pinsents will provide legal support for World Athletics' major events and deliver guidance and training to assist the sport's administrators globally, according to a statement by the firm.

It will also advise World Athletics on a number of legal issues including regulation and governance and brand protection.

In a statement, Sebastian Coe, World Athletics President said: "In many ways, this agreement represents our ambitions for our sport as a global powerhouse.

"We will need Pinsents' skillset in a number of areas as we build athletics around the world and I'm delighted that they also see the value in this relationship."

The partnership will be led by Pinsent Masons head of sports Trevor Watkins, and follows a competitive tender process.

Watkins added: "We believe we have a strong synergy with World Athletics in its desire to be the best example of a well governed sports federations, particularly in areas of governance, regulation, integrity and innovation."

Last year, in another example of sports law partnerships, Addleshaw Goddard provided advice to the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Road World Championships in return for sponsorship at the event.
