One of the founding partners of Cooley's London and Brussels bases has left the firm to join the competition boutique led by former Clifford Chance heavyweight Oliver Bretz.

Euclid Law, which Bretz founded in 2015 to cover competition matters out of London and Brussels, has hired Cooley competition partner Becket McGrath.

He joins after five years at the firm, during which time he helped establish the firm's two European bases. He joined Cooley as part of a group move in 2015 from Edwards Wildman Palmer, which established its London office and he also supported the launch of Cooley's Brussels office in 2019, which marked the firm's first foray in Continental Europe.

McGrath began his career at Baker McKenzie in 1994, and held associate roles at Simmons & Simmons and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer before joining legacy Berwin Leighton Paisner as a partner in 2005.

McGrath will be the fourth partner at Euclid Law. Bretz, who founded the boutique in 2015 after 15 years at Clifford Chance, said in a statement: "I am delighted to welcome Becket to the team — in addition to being an outstanding lawyer, Becket's market wide reputation and broad experience will be of great value to the firm and to our clients.

"Becket has a tremendous profile and expertise in technology markets, electronic distribution and e-commerce, which will both complement and enhance the Euclid offering."

In February, Cooley announced that it had grown its revenue by 8.4% in 2019, citing its new offices in Brussels and Hong Kong as drivers of growth.
