Ofcom's general counsel Polly Weitzman has left to join U.K. fibre broadband network provider CityFibre.

Weitzman takes on the new role after 15 years with the U.K. telecoms regulator. Ofcom's legal director Martin Ballantyne will replace her on an interim basis.

In an Ofcom statemet, Weitzman said: "I'll miss Ofcom hugely. It's been a privilege over many years to lead our high-calibre legal team, and to work closely with wider colleagues on our work to promote competition and protect consumers and audiences."

She added that she feels "the time is right for a new challenge".

CityFibre is the U.K.'s third national digital infrastructure platform and Weitzman joins as its first ever general counsel.

Greg Mesch, chief executive officer at CityFibre said in a statement: "We are thrilled that Polly will be joining CityFibre's executive team, bringing her unparalleled expertise in the UK's digital communications market."

She will take up the new role in January 2021 after a period of gardening leave.
