Nishimura & Asahi has become the first Japanese law firm to launch a formal law alliance in Singapore.
The firm has received an approval from the Singaporean government to operate in alliance with local firm Bayfront Law, a commercial boutique that handles both non-contentious matters and disputes. The 12-lawyer firm is led by managing director Kesavan Nair, who specializes in commercial litigation and international arbitration.
It follows a growing trend of firms with international ambitions expanding into the city-state. This month, U.K. firm Mishcon de Reya set its eyes on the island, while U.S. firm Crowell & Moring established a presence via an affiliate firm in February.
In addition to Nair, Bayfront, which started operations in 2017, has five additional directors, Sharmila Nair, Melissa Leong, Melissa Tan, Lo Kim Seng and James Wong.*
Nishimura opened in Singapore in 2012 and has 12 lawyers in the city-state. The office, led by M&A partner Masato Yamanaka and projects partner Shintaro Uno, focuses primarily on Japanese law matters but also has lawyers qualified in other Southeast Asian jurisdictions. Four of the eight Japanese lawyers based in Singapore including Yamanaka, according to Nishimura, are qualified in Singapore as foreign practitioners which allow them to advise on certain areas of Singaporean law.
The alliance will allow Nishimura and Bayfront to work as an integrated team to provide a one-stop platform of Singaporean, Japanese and international legal services, particularly for cross-border mergers and acquisitions and international arbitration, the firm said in a statement.
"The [formal law alliance] reflects Nishimura & Asahi's commitment to continued investment in Singapore and the ASEAN region," said the firm. In addition to Singapore, Nishimura also has Southeast Asian offices in Bangkok, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta and Yangon. Globally, the Japanese firm also has offices in China, New York, Dubai and Taipei, and is opening two offices in Frankfurt and Düsseldorf later this year.
*Correction June 8: A previous version of this story stated that there were three directors at Bayfront in addition to Kesavan Nair; there are actually five. The fourth paragraph of this story has been modified to reflect that. We regret the error.
