A former Clyde & Co partner has launched a new boutique disputes law firm in Abu Dhabi, to serve the booming projects sector in the Middle East and Africa regions.

Formerly a partner for three years at Clydes, Matthew Heywood formally launched construction disputes firm Mantle Law to provide advice on disputes concerning airports, ports, power generation, pipelines, road, and hospital projects, focussing on dispute resolution – especially arbitration, but also litigation, expert determination, adjudication, and alternative dispute resolution, according to a statement by the firm.

According to his LinkedIn profile, he was a partner at Clydes for nearly three years, and previously had stints at Osborne Clarke, Pinsent Masons and Reed Smith.

In March, data provider MEED Projects valued the Gulf Cooperation Council projects market at $3.1 trillion. As senior partner, Heywood sees the region's booming construction, infrastructure, and energy sectors as ripe with opportunity.

"What we have is a combination of a lot of investment, coupled with contracting companies from all around the world coming in to undertake these works," he said. "That's led to quite a healthy run of disputes in this region. It has been busy.

"[W]e want to build a business that can deliver the most fleet-of-foot, optimised and effective legal support to our clients, who are increasingly under pressure to deliver more with less."

After nearly a decade of construction, Abu Dhabi Airport's massive Midfield Terminal Building is expected to open in the next 12 months, while a new mall is planned at the capital's Reem Island.

"The firm will offer core legal services to contractors, employers and construction and engineering professionals in the market, with a singular focus on arbitration and disputes," a statement by the firm said.
