Baker McKenzie has re-elected its managing partner in Germany and Austria, and has appointed new practice leaders for its Europe and Middle East practice groups, the firm announced on Wednesday.

A partner at the firm since 1997, data and privacy partner Matthias Scholz will start his second three-year term on July 1.

In addition, a number of partners from Germany were appointed to new leadership roles. Christian Atzler, who is currently co-head of the corporate and M&A practice in Germany and Austria according to the firm's web page, will now lead the European M&A practice.

Nicolas Kredel, a member of the firm's EMEA antitrust & competition steering committee and co-head of the global competition economics group, will lead the EMEA antitrust and competition practice, while Oliver Socher is moving up from leading the German banking & finance practice to heading the wider European practice.

Ingo Strauss, currently co-head of the regional corporate M&A practice and a member of the firm's European private equity practice group steering committee, will head the EMEA private equity practice.

Meanwhile, Bernhard Trappehl, who served as managing partner of the firm's German and Austrian offices between 2007 and 2012, will head the European employment group. And lastly, Nikolaus Reinhuber has been reappointed to a second three-year term in his role as global chair of the industrials, manufacturing and transportation industry group—a role he has held since 2017.

"I am very pleased with the confidence that the partnership has placed in me by re-electing me," Scholz said in a statement. "The firm is well positioned to react flexibly to the requirements of the market and our clients and to successfully overcome challenges such as the current corona crisis."

On Wednesday, the firm also appointed new leaders for seven of its Asia Pacific practice and industry groups.
