Spanish law firm Zurbaran Abogados is opening an office in London, nearly 18 months after the firm launched via a three-way merger.

The firm was created in January 2019 when a trio of Spanish firms, Zamora de Claver, Cuellar Abogados and RZS Abogados y Economistas, merged.

Zurbaran Abogados has hired London-based lawyer Antonio Irastorza as counsel.

Irastorza currently runs business advisory service Lynx Advisors. According to his LinkedIn profile, Irastorza previously had stints as partner at Boodle Hatfield and Spanish firm Masons Buxeda Menchén.

Managing partner Ricardo Astorga said in a statement: "The incorporation of Antonio Irastorza represents a very important reinforcement to cover the already demanding needs of our clients in London.

"Having a new office in the heart of the City will allow us to accompany them and give them the high quality service that their activities require."

The firm currently has offices in Madrid, Seville and Zaragoza. According to its website, the firm currently has 27 lawyers, of which six are partners.

Meanwhile, the firm has also shaken up its wider leadership. The board has appointed Adolfo Cuellar as president, replacing Javier Romero Martínez-Cañavate.

A firm statement said that Cuellar and Astorga will "lead the new stage of development of the office".

Elsewhere in Spain, the country's law firms are tentatively moving their workforces back into their office spaces following a shift to working from home in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Garrigues reopened in Spain with 50% capacity on Monday, while in June, Uria Menéndez said it was testing all staff for COVID-19 as a preliminary step before reopening its offices.
