A leading maritime barrister and Queen's Counsel at Quadrant Chambers has passed away at the age of 62. 

Simon Kverndal, a shipping barrister, arbiter and mediator with over three decades of legal experience died of cancer on 14 June, according to a statement by Quadrant Chambers. 

Kverndal joined Quadrant Chambers, then 2 Essex Street, in 1984 after completing a degree form the University of Cambridge and being called to the bar in 1982. 

He was later appointed a Queen's Counsel in 2002. 

As well as his connection to Quadrant, Kverndal was also a council member of the London Shipping Law Centre and a third warden of the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights, according to his curriculam vitae published by the Singapore Chamber of Arbitration.

In a tribute published on the Quadrant Chambers website, MIchael Howard QC said: "He was a hardworking and popular silk.

"Having always been a diligent and hardworking advocate, he had blossomed in addition into a very effective arbitrator, renowned for his pleasantness and efficiency and, an unusual gift, for getting the right answer."

In a statement on the Quadrant Chambers website, a spokesperson said: "It is with great sadness that Quadrant Chambers informs our clients and colleagues that Simon Kverndal QC passed away on 14 June 2020 after a courageous battle with cancer."  

"Simon's generosity, good humour and friendship will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts are with Simon's family."
