The legal community in Brazil is in mourning after the passing of the young and influential managing partner of Mattos Filho, a top-billing law firm in Brazil.
José Eduardo Carneiro Queiroz, 49, died Monday in the state of São Paulo. Mattos Filho has not disclosed the cause of death. Roberto Quiroga, who led the firm before Queiroz, will temporarily reassume the role of managing partner.
Mattos Filho said in a statement that Queiroz, who friends called Zé, "leaves a profound legacy, not only for the firm but for all, for his inclusive, innovative style and superb mentorship."
Queiroz began his career at Mattos Filho in 1995, as an intern. The finance and capital markets attorney was promoted to managing partner in 2015, overseeing a period of strong growth for the firm.
Brazilian law firms and colleagues flooded LinkedIn with condolence notes, describing Queiroz as an apt leader with strong people skills and a devotion to social causes.
Amir Bocayuva Cunha, managing partner at Brazilian law firm Barbosa Müssnich Aragão, called Queiroz's passing "an irreparable loss" for family, friends, Mattos Filho and the entire legal community.
From time to time, Cunha said, the two managing partners would meet for lunch to compare notes on developments in the legal industry and the challenges of leading a large firm.
Apart from being a talented lawyer, Cunha says Queiroz was a "great human" who made a "huge contribution" to promoting diversity, racial inclusion and pro bono work in the Brazilian legal community.
Diego Barreto, chief financial officer at iFood, a food technology company, described Queiroz as a professional role model who counseled him throughout his career—from being a trainee in the Mattos Filho capital markets group in the early 2000s, though a decision to leave legal work and obtain a Master of Business Administration in Switzerland.
Two months ago, while Queiroz was still alive, Barreto says he thanked the lawyer for being a steadfast mentor. Barreto wrote on LinkedIn: "Zé was my first big professional reference—a person that I quickly began to admire from various angles."
