Law firms have been taking measures relating to NQ pay to curb the impacts of the coronavirus on finances.

Jones Day has joined several other firms in cutting its London-based newly-qualified (NQ) lawyers' salaries.

Jones Day has cut salaries by £5,000 for its London NQs, according to a person close to the matter.

Trainee rates at the firm will remain the same, with first year trainees earning £52,000 and second year trainees earning £59,000 a year.

Meanwhile, Simmons & Simmons has pushed back its NQ pay decision to later in 2020. The firm has said it will not slash the amount, committing to either increasing NQ pay or holding it at 2019's boosted rate of £79,000.

The decisions follow those of several other firms which have have either cut their NQ salaries or pushed back decisions on pay, in a bid to further curb the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.

In June, Clifford Chance, Baker McKenzie and Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner all cut their NQ salaries.
