Clifford Chance has delivered brownies to its U.K. employees in a bid to boost morale after the firm's annual summer party was cancelled due to COVID-19.

The firm sent staff in its London and Newcastle offices boxes of brownies from Hackney-based Luminary Bakery, which is a social enterprise bakery that offers skills training, employment and support to women who have experienced poverty, homelessness, violence or criminal activity.

In a note attached to the box of brownies, CC's U.K. managing partner Michael Bates and U.K. chief operating officer Sophie Schwass said: "At this time of year we would traditionally get together for our Summer Party and celebrate everything we have achieved over the last year.

"We are disappointed that we can't come together to celebrate this year, so instead we're sending a small something to enjoy with a cup of tea. We hope you use it as an excuse to take a break from work and share them with friends — or on a virtual tea break with colleagues."

In a post on LinkedIn, CC junior legal secretary Tate Smith said the gesture was "simply amazing".

The move is the latest from a top firm to motivate their workforce during the COVID-19 pandemic, as lawyers and staff have worked remotely since March. A number of firms have held virtual drinks and mealtimes, where employees can join video non-work-related video conferences to socialise, while others have run virtual quizzes and competitions.
