Ashurst has joined several other law firms in holding its newly qualified (NQ) salaries this year, opting to keep the pay at its current rate.

The firm will pay its incoming NQs at levels set in 2019 of up to £105,000, diverging from its usual approach of raising rates.

A spokesperson for the firm said: "We always aim to attract and retain the best diverse talent. Our NQ lawyers can receive up to £105K in remuneration. We believe that this is a competitive package and we continue to monitor and review to ensure that this remains the case."

The decisions follow those of several other firms which have have either cut their NQ salaries or pushed back decisions on pay, in a bid to further curb the financial impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier in July, Jones Day cut NQ salaries by £5,000, while in June, Clifford ChanceBaker McKenzie and Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner also cut their NQ salaries.

Ashurst is set to end its reduced hours scheme by the end of July, which saw staff across the firm's global offices work 80% of their usual hours and receive 20% less pay.
