Squire Patton Boggs is expanding its intellectual property and technology practice in Paris with the addition of a two-lawyer team, including one partner, from Boston-headquartered Foley Hoag, the firm has announced.

Catherine Muyl, who will lead the firm's IP&T practice in Paris, joins along with associate Marion Cavalier, Squire said in a statement.

The move bolsters Squire's capabilities in data protection compliance, an area that has boomed in Europe since the implementation in 2018 of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

"Catherine and Marion are multifaceted international practitioners who strengthen our European IP capabilities on both commercial and contentious matters," said David Elkins, the firm's global IP&T practice group leader. "They also bring to our table depth of experience handling data protection issues for clients."

Before joining Foley Hoag in 2015 as a partner, Muyl practiced as a partner at Taylor Wessing and was of counsel at Morgan Lewis & Bockius and Jones Day, according to her LinkedIn profile.

The arrival of Muyl and Cavalier brings Squire' Paris office to 44 lawyers, including 15 partners, according to the firm. The global IP team counts 100 practitioners and patent agents, the firm said.

Squire's Paris expansion follows the recent additions of new partners in Dubai, New York,  London, Milan and Singapore to the firm's dispute resolution practice.

In June, Squire added five lawyers from HFW in London to its shipping and commodities group.

And in January, Squire opened its first office in Italy, setting up shop in Milan with a four-partner hire from Curtis, Mallet-Prevost & Mosle.
