Longtime Herbert Smith Freehills partner and firm managing partner of finance, real estate and projects Jason Ricketts has resigned from the firm to join the investment company and charitable foundation of billionaire iron ore miner Andrew Forrest.
Perth-based Ricketts will join the Minderoo Foundation and the Tattarang investment group as general counsel in October. He has acted for the public and private sectors in the delivery of major projects in Australia and overseas, and has global experience in the water, waste, energy, transport, health and mining sectors.
Ricketts has been a Herbert Smith Freehills lifer having first joined legacy Freehills in 1990 and has been a partner since 1996. He became the combined firm's managing partner for Australia in 2012 when Freehills merged with Herbert Smith and held the position until 2018 when he became the firm's global head of finance, real estate and infrastructure projects group. In May, he was also given new responsibility to oversee the firm's Latin America practice as part of a global leadership shuffle after new chief executive Justin D'Agostino took office.
"Jason's outstanding legal and commercial expertise, combined with his enthusiastic and collegiate approach to business, make him a wonderful asset for Minderoo Foundation and the Tattarang group of companies. I wish him every success," said D'Agostino in a statement.
"Jason is one of Australia's most respected lawyers, with very strong commercial expertise that's been proven globally," said Andrew Forrest in a statement.
"We are very excited to have him join our leadership team and to invest his knowledge and experience in the world-changing work that we do. To have such a quality professional as Jason join us is testament to the outstanding work and ambitions of Minderoo Foundation and Tattarang."
Ricketts will be reporting to Minderoo Foundation and Tattarang CEO Andrew Hagger, and will lead a legal team working across Minderoo Foundation's philanthropic activities and the strongly growing Tattarang investment group.
Andrew "Twiggy" Forrest is the founder of Perth-based Fortescue Metals Group and Australia's eighth richest person with a fortune just shy of A$8 billion ($5.7 billion), according to the Australian Financial Review Rich List.
His Mindaroo foundation has A$2 billion committed to a range of global initiatives in arts and culture, medical research, environmental protection and early childhood education. Tattarang investment group invests in sectors including agri-food, energy, resources, property, hospitality, sport and entertainment.
