When lockdown was first imposed in the U.K. in March 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, courts up and down the country were closed with the majority of hearings going online or not taking place at all.

The President of the Family Law Division in England and Wales was clear that the decision whether or not to have a remote hearings in family law cases – be it in relation to children or finances – was at the discretion of the individual judges and that no “do or do not” guidance would be provided.
