Allen & Overy is the latest international law firm to announce its new partner cohort for 2021, adding 30 partners to its global ranks.

The number of promotions, which are effective from May 1 2021, are similar to in previous years and cover six of A&O's main practice areas with banking making up the largest part.

One third of the new partners are women, according to a statement by the firm on Thursday, while the lawyers promoted hail from 16 of the firm's international offices, the statement added.

The gender make up of the latest cohort reflects the firm's attempts to improve the gender diversity of its partnership in recent years, including setting a target that by 2021 30% of partner candidates should be female.

A&O's Asia Pacific bench has added five new partners across its Hong Kong, Singapore and Sydney bases.

In continental Europe and the Middle East, its partner ranks have grown by 13 across bases including Abu Dhabi and Milan.

Two lawyers were promoted in New York, while the remainder of the new appointments are in the firm's largest office, London.

Global managing partner Gareth Price said in a statement: "We are committed to bringing through new generations of diverse leaders that cover a broad geographic spread, as well as practice and product specialisms. This is an incredibly talented group who we know will add to the future success of our firm.

Other law firms to announce their 2021 partner promotions recently include Slaughter and May and Macfarlanes, which both added five to their ranks, and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, which promoted 17 lawyers to its partnership worldwide.
