This week, business of law reporter Dylan Jackson talks with New York-based legal recruiter and consultant Sharon Mahn, who is the founder and CEO of Mahn Consulting, about the wild Big Law associate compensation landscape and what firms are doing to attract and retain young lawyer talent. The recent move by several firms to bump starting associate salaries to $200,000 and up has set off a cascade of movement throughout the AmLaw 100, to the delight of associates and dismay of some law firm clients and support staff. Associates "are in a position of power," in a way they haven't been in 20 years, Mahn says.
She discusses why the latest associate salary wars remind her of the 2008 Dot.com boom, the recruiting and public relations benefits to early salary movers like Davis Polk, and why some firms that traditionally haven't been aggressive on the associate salary front are getting on board early this time around.
