Costa, William Hill and the FCA: A Slideshow of June's In-House Moves
A busy month for general counsel appointments also saw some major panels unveiled.

Paul Tanner has joined oil and gas company Waldorf Production as its general counsel, a company statement said. He was previously general counsel at Spirit Energy Limited and has over 20 years' experience as an international energy lawyer, including senior legal roles with Shell and Centrica. Richard Barlow has been appointed interim general counsel at Chetwood Financial, a spokesperson said. According to LinkedIn, Barlow was previously legal director at digital bank Monzo and group general counsel at Domestic & General. Sunita Savjani has been promoted to general counsel at U.K. coffee chain Costa Coffee, a spokesperson has confirmed. According to LinkedIn, Savjani was most recently assistant general counsel at the chain since 2018. Verity Young has been appointed as general counsel at William Hill. According to the company website, she joined the company as group senior legal counsel in February 2018 and previously held roles at Ladbrokes/Coral (now Entain). A former Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer litigation partner has been appointed as interim general counsel at the U.K. Financial Conduct Authority. According to a statement, David Scott, who retired from the firm in October 2020, takes on the role following the recent departure of FCA general counsel Sean Martin. Nine firms have been appointed to the National Legal Services Framework (NLSF) by the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime panel, according to a contract award published by the Metropolitan Police Service. The panel is in place for four years and is divided into four lots. The firms are: DWF, TLT, Weightmans, Blake Morgan, DAC Beachcroft, Plexus, Capsticks, Gowling and Michelmores.\ 17 firms have won places on London universities purchasing consortium (LUPC) £30 million legal roster. The winning firms are: Addleshaw Goddard, BLM, Brodies, Bevan Brittan, Browne Jacobson, Capital Law, Clyde & Co, Eversheds Sutherland, Michelmores, Mills & Reeve, Muckle, DAC Beachcroft, Pinsent Masons, Shakespeare Martineau, VWV, Weightmans and Womble Bond Dickinson. The panel will be in place for three years. Gerhard Du Plessis has joined cloud banking platform Mambu as its inaugural general counsel, according to a company spokesperson. He was previously general counsel at Cobham, according to LinkedIn.

The action, filed Oct. 7 in New York Southern District Court by the Brown Law Firm, accuses the company's directors and/or officers of falsely expressing confidence in the company’s restructuring of its sales incentive plan and downplaying the severity of decreases in its upfront commitments. The case is 1:24-cv-07594, Roy v. Ittycheria et al.

The suit was filed Sept. 7 in Wisconsin Western District Court by Levine Eisberner LLC and Siri & Glimstad on behalf of a project manager who claims that he was wrongfully terminated after applying for a religious exemption to the defendant's COVID-19 vaccine mandate. The case, assigned to U.S. Magistrate Judge Anita Marie Boor, is 3:24-cv-00630, Secker, Nathan v. Epic Systems Corporation.

David X. Sullivan, Thomas J. Finn and Gregory A. Hall from McCarter & English have entered appearances for Sunrun Installation Services in a pending civil rights lawsuit. The complaint was filed Sept. 4 in Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M. Berke on behalf of former employee George Edward Steins, who was arrested and charged with employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson. The complaint alleges that had Sunrun informed the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection that the plaintiff's employment had ended in 2017 and that he no longer held Sunrun's home improvement contractor license, he would not have been hit with charges, which were dismissed in May 2024. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Jeffrey A. Meyer, is 3:24-cv-01423, Steins v. Sunrun, Inc. et al.
