Key July Hires and Promotions in the UK Legal Market
This month new hires joined DLA Piper and Addleshaw Goddard, among others.

Moves, promotions and appointments this month include: Bonnie Calnan, Dominic Danvers, Paul Allerston, Colin Lavelle, Joanne Raisbeck, Edward Liu, Leigh Mallon, Jason Collins, Ewen Scott, Jon Lent, Adrian Chiodo. DLA Piper has hired a partner from Pinsent Masons as its new head of international tax disputes, a statement confirmed. Jason Collins joins after over 20 years at Pinsent Masons, the statement added, where he also headed up the firm's litigation, regulatory and tax team. Addleshaw Goddard has boosted its London leveraged finance offering with a partner hire from Jones Day, a statement has said. Ewen Scott joins after three years at Jones Day. Prior to this, he was a partner at Ashurst, the statement added. London-based Ashurst corporate partner Nick Williamson has been named as the firm's U.K. head of corporate following Karen Davies' election to global chair, a firm spokesperson confirmed. Meanwhile, Madrid office managing partner Jorge Vázquez will co-head the global corporate group alongside London partner Jason Radford. Leigh Mallon has joined Steptoe & Johnson as partner in its London office. He joins from Fried Frank where he was special counsel, the firm statement said, and will join the firm's litigation practice. Hill Dickinson has promoted four partners in its latest promotions round. According to a firm statement, Manchester-based Paul Allerston, Liverpool-based Colin Lavelle and Joanne Raisbeck and Hong Kong-based Edward Liu have made the cut. Cavendish Legal Group has hired Dominic Danvers, a statement said. The move comes as the sector expects an uptick in property disputes following the U.K. government's decision to lift the ban on tenant evictions earlier in June. According to LinkedIn, Danvers joins from Leasehold Law, where he was a solicitor for 11 months. DLA Piper has hired Dentons partner Bonnie Calnan in London, according to a firm statement. Calnan joins the real estate team and her experience includes acting for private equity and debt funds, overseas investors and sovereign wealth funds. According to LinkedIn, she leaves Dentons after two years. Latham & Watkins lost leveraged finance partner Adrian Chiodo to Paul Hastings in London, according to a statement by Paul Hastings. The partner leaves the firm after over a decade, according to his LinkedIn. Squire Patton Boggs has added partner Jon Lent to its London-based financial services practice, the firm said in a statement. Lent joins from Gowling WLG where he co-led the firm's real estate finance practice and led its healthcare and hotel finance practices. His move was joined by two senior associates and a director.

The case, filed Oct. 2 in Massachusetts District Court by the Brown Law Firm on behalf of Stephen Austen, accuses certain officers and directors of misleading investors in regard to Symbotic's potential for margin growth by failing to disclose that the company was not equipped to timely deploy its systems or manage expenses through project delays. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton, is 1:24-cv-12522, Austen v. Cohen et al.

The action, filed Oct. 7 in New York Southern District Court by the Brown Law Firm, accuses the company's directors and/or officers of falsely expressing confidence in the company’s restructuring of its sales incentive plan and downplaying the severity of decreases in its upfront commitments. The case is 1:24-cv-07594, Roy v. Ittycheria et al.

Amy O. Bruchs and Kurt F. Ellison of Michael Best & Friedrich have entered appearances for Epic Systems Corp. in a pending employment discrimination lawsuit. The suit was filed Sept. 7 in Wisconsin Western District Court by Levine Eisberner LLC and Siri & Glimstad on behalf of a project manager who claims that he was wrongfully terminated after applying for a religious exemption to the defendant's COVID-19 vaccine mandate. The case, assigned to U.S. Magistrate Judge Anita Marie Boor, is 3:24-cv-00630, Secker, Nathan v. Epic Systems Corporation.

The complaint was filed Sept. 4 in Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M. Berke on behalf of former employee George Edward Steins, who was arrested and charged with employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson. The complaint alleges that had Sunrun informed the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection that the plaintiff's employment had ended in 2017 and that he no longer held Sunrun's home improvement contractor license, he would not have been hit with charges, which were dismissed in May 2024.
