The United Nations Human Rights Committee has called on the Australian government to compensate First Nations residents of the Torres Strait Islands after finding it failed to protect them from the impacts of climate change.
Australia's failure to adequately protect indigenous Torres Islanders against adverse impacts of climate change violated their rights to enjoy their culture and be free from arbitrary interferences with their private life, family and home, the Committee said in its ruling on the slanders' complaint.
