The rule of law is getting trampled across much of Latin America and the Caribbean as rising authoritarianism chips away at checks on power and basic rights, according to the 2022 World Justice Project Rule of Law Index.

The index is compiled via detailed surveys sent out to legal experts as well as more than 1,000 households in each country evaluated. Lawyers from global firms including Baker McKenzie, Dentons, DLA Piper, Hogan Lovells and Kirkland & Ellis weighed in on their respective home countries for this year’s tallies in Latin America.
