After weeks of heated and public debate, lawyers in the Canadian province of Alberta on Monday voted resoundingly in favor of keeping a rule that mandates lawyers take a course on Indigenous culture and history.

Of the 11,100 lawyers in the oil-rich province, almost 3,500 logged in to a special virtual meeting of the Law Society of Alberta for the vote on whether the regulator should have the power to implement continuing professional development (CPD) courses. More than 2,600 voted to keep the rule, which also allows the LSA to automatically suspend those who fail to complete the mandatory Indigenous culture course, called “The Path.”
